Eyeglass lens index is a measure of how thick or thin a lens will be for a given prescription. The higher the lens index, the thinner and lighter the lens will be. This is important for people with strong prescriptions (above +/-2.50) who want lenses that are not too thick and bulky. Higher lens indices also allow for better vision and more comfortable wear.Typically, the index numbers range from 1.50 to 1.74.
1.50 Standard index – These work best for prescriptions up to +/-2.50. 1.50 clear lenses are included in our frame prices.
1.56 Mid Index -The 1.56 is 15% thinner than the 1.50 Standard. These work well with prescriptions up to +/-3.50 . 1.56 Photochromic lenses are included in our frame prices. Choose this option if you need a free color-changing lenses.
1.60 High Index – These are 20% thinner than 1.50 Standard . These work well for prescriptions up to +/-4.50. 1.60 Kodak UV Blue Premium is included in the frame prices. Chose this option if you need a lens with blue-light protection.
1.67 High-Index – These lenses are 30% thinner than Standard with the same prescription. For higher prescriptions ( up to +/-6.00, this lens material and index works well due to its reduced weight and edge thickness.
1.74 Ultra High Index – 1.74 high index are the thinnest and lightest lenses you can get in this package. They are recommended for individuals with a strong eyeglass prescription, typically for powers above +/-4.00 because they are aspheric in design. The 1.74 is made thinner and flatter than standard spherical lenses, which helps reduce the magnification of the eyes.
Bear in mind, the above are suggestion only. Prescription is not the only factor used to determine the lens thickness. Your inter-pupillary distance, frame type, frame size etc also plays a role. You can also choose a ens beyond the suggested range – for example, a 1.56 Photochromic for -5.50, if you don’t really care about the lens thickness.
Standard clear HMC ( Anti-reflective coat) is included in the price. Choose the Easy clean coat, if you prefer an enhanced coating with better scratch-resistance and easy clean-ability.
