How we chose these lenses

We started from the 2026 contact lens review by Dr Joseph Allan, an optometrist who has fitted lenses for over ten years (Doctor Eye Health, September 2026). We then checked every claim against the lens makers’ own data and added what we see every day fitting lenses in Abu Dhabi.

Every lens in this guide is a genuine product from Alcon, Johnson & Johnson (ACUVUE), CooperVision or ZEISS.

Best daily contact lenses: DAILIES TOTAL1 and PRECISION1

Daily lenses are the first choice for most eye doctors. You wear a fresh pair each day and throw them away at night. There is no cleaning and no case, and the risk of infection and irritation is lower than with lenses you reuse.

Our two top daily picks both come from Alcon. They feel different on the eye, so it is worth knowing how.

DAILIES TOTAL1: the most comfortable surface

DAILIES TOTAL1 has a breathable silicone hydrogel core with 33% water. The water content rises to more than 80% at the surface, close to the eye’s own front surface. That soft, cushioned surface is why it is often the first lens we suggest for people whose eyes feel tired or dry by evening.

Because the surface holds so much water, the lens can feel slippery when you take it out. Dry your hands and fingertips thoroughly first, and removal becomes easy.

PRECISION1: easy to handle, lower price

PRECISION1 has a 51% water core with a thin, permanent moisture layer of more than 80% water on the outside (Alcon calls this SMARTSURFACE). The lens is a little firmer, so it holds its shape on your finger. That makes it easy to put in and take out, which helps first-time wearers.

It also costs less than DAILIES TOTAL1, which makes it one of the best-value silicone hydrogel dailies.

Prefer a lens without silicone?

Some people simply get on better with a classic hydrogel lens, without silicone. These lenses are soft from the first minute, and they usually cost less too.

ZEISS Contact Day 1

Most people know ZEISS for camera, microscope and spectacle lenses. The German optics company also makes contact lenses with the same focus on clear optics. ZEISS Contact Day 1 is made from a bio-hydrogel with algin, a natural moisture agent from seaweed, and holds 58% water. Its thin edge makes it easy to forget you are wearing it.

One small extra: each box has 32 lenses instead of the usual 30, so you get two spare lenses for the day one drops or tears.

ZEISS Contact Day 30 Compatic

This is the monthly lens from ZEISS. It is made from a bio-hydrogel (vitafilcon A) with 54% water, designed to hold moisture and resist deposits. That makes it a good fit for long days in air conditioning or in front of a screen. It covers a wide range of powers, from +10.00 to −20.00.

Proclear 1 Day: built for dryness

Proclear 1 Day from CooperVision uses PC Technology. Phosphorylcholine, a molecule found naturally in the membranes of human cells, is built into the lens material. It attracts and holds water, so a thin layer of moisture stays on the lens, and the lens resists drying out and deposits. The lens is 60% water, and it is one of the few daily lenses specifically cleared in the US for wearers with mild dryness.

Best monthly contact lenses: TOTAL30 and Biofinity

People usually choose monthly lenses for two reasons. They cost much less than dailies, and they come in more prescriptions. The trade-off is a daily cleaning routine with a proper solution and a clean case.

TOTAL30: the newest monthly technology

TOTAL30 is the only reusable lens with Alcon’s Water Gradient design. The water content goes from 55% in the core to almost 100% at the surface. It also has CELLIGENT technology, which in Alcon’s lab tests resists bacteria and fatty deposits building up on the lens over the month. For a monthly lens that still feels fresh in week four, this is where we start.

Biofinity: proven, and made in almost any prescription

Biofinity from CooperVision has been around longer, and that is part of its value. It is comfortable, breathable and holds water well (CooperVision’s Aquaform technology). Biofinity also comes in toric, multifocal and extra-range (XR) versions, so it covers prescriptions that many other lenses can’t. If Biofinity already works well for you, you don’t need to switch just because something is newer.

Two-week lenses: comfortable, if you keep to the date

If monthly lenses don’t feel fresh enough but dailies are over your budget, a two-week lens sits in between. ACUVUE OASYS (2-week) is one of the most comfortable reusable lenses, and many of our wearers love it.

The one thing to watch is the change date. It is easy to lose track and keep the same pair for six weeks, and that raises the risk of infection. Set a phone reminder for every second Sunday, and the lens will serve you well.

Best contact lenses for dry eyes in the UAE

Air conditioning at home, in the office and in the car, long hours on screens, and dust outside are hard on contact lens wearers here. The right lens helps a lot. But if you have true dry eye disease, no lens will fix it on its own. Treat the dryness first, and lens comfort usually improves too.

It uses TearStable technology to help keep your tear film stable through long, screen-heavy days. It also filters about 60% of blue-violet light, according to ACUVUE. The filter gives the lens a light tint that a few people notice.

If even the best soft lenses feel dry, scleral lenses may help. These larger, rigid lenses rest on a layer of fluid, so the eye stays wet all day.

Best contact lenses for astigmatism: DAILIES TOTAL1 for Astigmatism

Lenses for astigmatism (toric lenses) have to stay at the right angle on your eye. If one turns even a little, your vision blurs between blinks. The best toric lens is the one that stays steady on your eye while still feeling comfortable at the end of the day.

How PRECISION BALANCE 8|4 keeps the lens steady

Most toric lenses use a little extra weight at the bottom to stop them turning. Alcon’s PRECISION BALANCE 8|4 design improves on this with two stabilising points, at the 8 o’clock and 4 o’clock positions of the lens, instead of one.

• Your eyelids do the work. The upper lid gently presses the lens down, and the lower lid holds both stabilising points in balance.
• It settles fast and stays put. The lens finds its correct angle soon after you put it in, and holds it as you blink and look around.
• Wider clear zone. The design leaves more room for the optical centre of the lens, which helps keep vision sharp when your eyes move.

PRECISION1 for Astigmatism uses the same design at a lower price. It’s a good choice if easy handling or budget matters most.

If a lens keeps rotating: ACUVUE Blink Stabilized

Toric lenses carry small marks near the edge. In the fitting, the optometrist watches these marks to see whether the lens sits straight or turns. In a small number of eyes, one design keeps moving. Then we switch to ACUVUE’s Blink Stabilized design, which uses your blinks to push the lens back into place. The price of a box can be misleading. A 90-pack of dailies lasts one eye 90 days. A 6-pack of monthlies lasts one eye six months. Here is what each lens really costs per day, for both eyes, if you wear lenses every day:

Monthly lenses are the cheapest way to wear contacts every day. But a monthly lens has to be thrown away 30 days after you open it, even if you only wore it a few times. If you wear lenses just one or two days a week, dailies cost about the same, because you only open a pair when you use it.
